Providing Psychological Care Remotely

Lesson 7: Consent for remote support

At the end of the first session of remote support, it is vital to gain consent specifically for being supported remotely. To do this, summarise the points covered in this module:

  • What will be used to provide remote support
  • Confidentiality/security limitations
  • How risk will be managed
  • Setting boundaries
  • Communication adaptations

Then discuss the following:

  • Negatives and positives of receiving support remotely. For example, the therapeutic relationship is different – it might be more difficult to understand each other’s communication, and indicate that you might sometimes need to double check the meaning of a comment/statement.
  • Find out who else is involved in the person’s care, and if necessary, gain consent to speak with them
  • Any questions or concerns the person may have

documentAsk the person specifically for consent and document the consent in your case notes.
